Build a Squirrel Den Box: Easy Plans for a Cozy Habitat

Watching squirrels scamper and play is a delightful part of nature's spectacle. You can enhance their lives and provide a safe haven by building a squirrel den box. This guide provides detailed plans and instructions to help you create a welcoming home for your furry friends.

Materials You'll Need

Gather these supplies before you begin:

  • Wood: Choose a weather-resistant wood like cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated pine. You'll need boards approximately 1 inch thick.
  • Screws: Use wood screws that are long enough to penetrate both pieces of wood you're joining.
  • Saw: A circular saw or handsaw to cut the wood to size.
  • Drill: To pre-drill holes for screws, preventing wood splitting.
  • Measuring Tape: Accuracy is key, so use a trusty measuring tape.
  • Level: Ensure the box is level for stability.
  • Hammer: For securing nails if needed.
  • Safety Glasses: Always protect your eyes when working with power tools.
  • Optional: Exterior paint or stain to weatherproof the box.

Step-by-Step Construction Guide

Follow these steps to build your squirrel den box:

1. Cut the Wood

Using your saw, cut the following pieces of wood:

  • Two pieces for the front and back, each measuring 12 inches wide by 10 inches tall.
  • Two pieces for the sides, each measuring 10 inches wide by 10 inches tall.
  • One piece for the bottom, measuring 12 inches wide by 10 inches long.
  • One piece for the roof, measuring 14 inches wide by 12 inches long (optional: overhang for added protection).

2. Assemble the Base

Attach the two side pieces to the front and back pieces using screws. Pre-drill holes to prevent splitting. Ensure all sides are flush and meet at 90-degree angles. Then, attach the bottom piece to the base using screws.

3. Create the Roof

Attach the roof piece to the top of the box using screws. If you want an overhang, extend the roof pieces beyond the sides of the box by 1 inch on each side.

4. Add the Entrance

Using your saw, cut a 4-inch by 4-inch opening in the front piece of the box, approximately 6 inches from the bottom. This will serve as the squirrel's entrance.

5. Finish and Secure

If desired, paint or stain the exterior of the box to weatherproof it. Be sure to use a non-toxic paint or stain that's safe for wildlife.

6. Install Your New Squirrel Den Box

Choose a suitable location for your den box. It should be:

  • Elevated: Place the box at least 5 feet off the ground to deter predators.
  • Near trees: Squirrels love to be near trees, so position the box close to a sturdy branch or trunk.
  • Out of direct sunlight: Ensure the box gets some shade to avoid overheating.

Secure the box to the branch or tree using strong screws or wire.

Tips for Attracting Squirrels to Your Den Box

To encourage squirrels to use your den box, follow these tips:

  • Provide a food source: Set up a bird feeder nearby or offer supplemental food like nuts or seeds.
  • Make it inviting: Place some nesting material inside the box, such as shredded paper or cloth scraps.
  • Be patient: It might take some time for squirrels to discover and occupy your den box.

Building a squirrel den box is a rewarding project that offers a safe and cozy haven for these playful creatures. Enjoy watching them explore and settle into their new home!
